Random Acts of Learning….

This video comes from the Philadelphia Opera Company’s Random Act of Culture. A flash mob of singers transformed the mall on day with the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah.

What an amazing experience to be there! I love the idea of random acts of culture…. I wonder how we could implement this with education. Random acts of learning? Flash mobs with an educational purpose?

  1. This is great! Here’s a similar piece, with much different results. Legendary violinist Joshua Bell played for almost an hour in a DC Metro station: Too busy to stop and hear the music. The video is priceless. Why do some random acts of culture take off, while others crash and burn?

I love the idea of flash mobs with an educational purpose. Perhaps send a text to everyone in school alerting them to lunchtime renditions of Romeo and Juliet?

I’ve seen that Joshua Bell video. So sad, but so true. It makes me wonder about context. I wonder if the things we learned in school would be viewed differently if we somehow put them in a new context (took them out of “school”). Perhaps learning would be relevant in a new context….?
